The Italian peninsula is geologically dynamic, resulting in landslides, earthquakes, and volcanoes in various areas throughout the country.

While these structures and events represent a risk to the local populations, they also represent an opportunity to study the processes which control them in the hopes of minimizing similar risks. In this regard we have chosen a number of representative sites and used them as “natural laboratories” to examine issues related to the leakage and migration of gases in the near surface environment, to develop and test different technologies for leakage monitoring, and to the possible impacts on the environment of gas leakage.

Much of this work has focused on using sites where natural, geologically produced CO2 is leaking to determine, and minimize, the possible risks related to CO2 geological storage (also known as Carbon Capture and Storage, or CCS).
