Stan Beaubien

Stan Beaubien (BSc Hons in Geological Sciences, MSc in Earth Sciences, PhD in Environmental Sciences) joined the Fluid Chemistry Laboratory of the Department of Earth Sciences of University of Rome “La Sapienza” in 1996, conducting research on gas and water geochemistry, site monitoring, and technology development, with particular regard to the geological storage of CO2.

In particular, he has specialized in the study of natural sites where geologically produced carbon dioxide is migrating through the subsurface and leaking to the atmosphere, using these sites to better understand potential safety, risk, impact, and monitoring issues related to Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).

Thanks to involvement in 9 EC funded projects focused on various aspects of CCS, he has a wide knowledge and experience in multi-disciplinary studies, including research involving geophysics, remote sensing, biology, oceanography, structural geology, and engineering.

Additional experience includes analytical chemistry, designing and running laboratory and field experiments, computer coding and modelling, limnology, hydrogeology, carbonate system cycling, mineral exploration, and geological mapping. In total he has been involved in 20 EC-funded research projects (FP4 to FP7, H2020), often being responsible for day-to-day running and/or coordinating of field campaigns, sample analyses, data interpretation and report writing.

The most recent of these have focused on CCS, including the completed projects of “RISCS” – Research into Impacts and Safety in CO2 Storage, “ECO2” - Sub-seabed carbon storage and the marine environment, and “SiteChar” - Characterisation of European CO2 Storage.

He will also be strongly involved in the recently approved H2020 project “ENOS” - ENabling Onshore CO2 Storage in Europe.
